Jorge Zamora

Jorge Zamora, 69, passed from this life into the arms of his Heavenly Father on July 12, 2023.

Jorge was born on June 16, 1954, in Mexico City, Mexico to Jorge and Nellie (Sobrino) Zamora.  He graduated from the National University of Mexico in 1984 and practiced International Corporate Law for 10 years.  Jorge married the love of his life, Rebecca Kennedy, and they enjoyed 35 wonderful years of marriage in Mexico and Texas.  He was a dedicated husband and father.  In 1999, Jorge graduated from Texas Tech University with a Doctoral Degree in Spanish Literature. His teaching career spanned 27 years at 2 colleges with his final 22 years at Texas Tech University in the Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures Department.  He taught a variety of courses in Spanish culture and literature. Jorge believed the best part of teaching was caring about his students, offering them guidance through life, and having a positive impact on their life.  Jorge also served as Codirector of the TTU Mexico Field Course for 12 years and loved sharing the language, history, and culture of Mexico with his students.

Jorge loved life and had several hobbies and interests. He was an avid reader, and his favorite type of literature was mystery concentrating on noir crime and detective novels.  One of his passions included the collection and restoration of vintage typewriters.  He also loved classic and sci-fi movies as well as listening to many different genres of music.  Anyone that knew Jorge would describe him as having a great sense of humor, fun loving, and was blessed with the gift of mercy.  He was a man of integrity who brought joy, comfort, and wisdom to all around him.

Jorge was preceded in death by his father, Jorge Zamora.

Those left to cherish Jorge’s memory include his wife, Rebecca Zamora; his daughter, Mia and her husband Vince Ocampo; his mother, Nellie Sobrino; sisters, Penny Del Rio and Dolores Zamora; and multiple other relatives.  He leaves many family members to honor his memory.

Funeral service will be 11:00am, Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at Southcrest Baptist Church in Lubbock, TX with Dr. Jerry Newman officiating.
