It is with heavy hearts that we announce Herbert Odell Walker, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed from this world on August 5, 2023 at 91 years old.
Herb was born in Fletcher, Oklahoma on January 17, 1932. He would later move to Littlefield, Texas where he would marry the love of his life, Wewona Mae Walker, on September 24, 1949. With the outbreak of the Korean War, Herb would be drafted and deployed with the United States Army where he served 2 years in the Field Artillery. During his service he attained the rank of Technical Sergeant and was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the Bronze Star, the U.N. Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Upon returning home, he and Wewona would become parents of two beautiful girls, Shana Walker Cree (1955) and Regina Walker (1959). After moving to Odessa they became long time members of Temple Baptist Church. They enjoyed traveling with “The Girls”, friends and grandkids through the years, and were never without a deck of cards for a game of canasta. They also took multiple trips to Jerusalem as well as mission trips around the world.
Herb owned and operated Walker Battery & Electric until he retired and sold the business, he then drove semi trucks to almost all 50 states as a hot shot, and raised horses, cattle, emu and ostriches over the years. He was an avid mechanic and spent many, many, many hours working on his truck and 5th wheel camper…especially while on vacations with his best friends.
After 58 years of marriage, Wewona went to be with our Lord. A year later Herb would meet Vera Fuller at church. They soon fell in love and were married on January 3, 2009. They continued to live in Odessa for 13 years before moving to Wilshire Place Assisted Living in Lubbock, TX in early 2022.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Crawford and Mabel Walker, the love of his life Wewona, his siblings, Elvis and Lucille and his eldest daughter, Shana.
Herb will be remembered fondly by those he leaves behind: Regina Walker (daughter), Ted & Debbie Fuller, Billy & Ellen Trent (bonus children), Aaron Cree, Wesley & Azure Collins, Anthony Cree, and Kyla Gaston (grandchildren), Adyson and Zackary Hurt, Damian and Tristan Cree, Nathan and Willow Gaston (great grandchildren); along with countless others whose lives he touched so dearly.
A memorial of Herb’s life will be held on September 2, 2023 at 10:00am at Narrow Gate Fellowship, 4410 Andrews Highway, Odessa, TX 79762.
