Dr. Ismael Regis de Farias Junior, 62, of Lubbock, Texas, went to be with the Lord unexpectedly on the morning of Wednesday, August 3rd, 2022, after complications to his Aortic Valve Replacement surgery at Covenant Medical Center.
He was born on August 26th, 1959, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Geruza Macedo de Farias and Ismael Regis de Farias. Ismael grew up in Brazil and attended the Universidade Federal do RJ, where he got his Bachelors in Physics and Masters in Computer Sciences. In 1990 he moved to Atlanta, GA, and got his Ph.D. in Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization, in December 1995. He started working for IBM and was sent to work on a project in Brazil where he finally found the love of his life. He proposed and married Milene Amato and became a beloved husband and a dedicated and loving father to four children. Also, he was a faithful friend, a respected teacher, and a Christian who loved the Lord, church, and community.
On September 25, 2012 he became a proud American Citizen. He actively promoted the values that guide us as Americans: hard work, honesty, courage, curiosity, loyalty and patriotism. Above all, he stayed true to his Brazilian heritage (particularly his soccer team and Brazilian cuisine).
He was fun to be around. He loved every opportunity to watch a new Marvel movie in theaters with his family, and to discuss his hobbies which included: Quantum optimization, quantum walk, topological quantum computing, Hamiltonian engineering, and Brazilian soccer. As a compassionate professor, and himself an immigrant, he always welcomed his international students to his home and loved treating them to a good Brazilian dinner. He treasured these moments with his students and always looked forward to his annual Thanksgiving celebration where he insisted that all of his students provided dishes or desserts from their respective countries.
Ismael is survived by his wife, Milene; his four children, Deborah, Rafael, Leonardo, and Felipe; mother, Geruza Macedo de Farias; sister Mirian Macedo de Farias. In Laws: Armando and Ruth Neuza Amato; sister-in-law Daniela Amato; Nieces and Nephews Hanna and Joao Pedro, Rebeca and Vinicius. He was greeted in heaven by his father, Ismael Regis de Farias.
Ismael will be forever remembered for his beautiful smile, gentle eyes, caring heart, loving hug, extraordinarily intellectual mind, and unconditional love. Although our hearts are heavy, we will celebrate his life and together find comfort that he is in heaven!
“Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:16
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, August 15th, 2022 at Southcrest Baptist Church (3801 S Loop 289, Lubbock, TX 79423).
