Dennis Richardson Obituary

Dennis Lane Richardson of Lubbock passed away on Wednesday, June 29th. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Paula Richardson, his daughter Whitney Bigham, his son-in-law Jeffrey Bigham, and his grandson Jack Bigham.

Dennis was born in Lubbock, TX on November 9, 1948, to Wayne and Naydine Richardson and remained a lifelong Lubbock resident. He was a member of the first graduating class from Coronado High School and then went on to receive his BA in Art and an MFA from Texas Tech University.

In 1975, Dennis opened Uncommon Graphics in Lubbock. For over 40 years, the store provided expert framing, beautiful art, the best cards in town, and unique gifts for generations of residents. If you needed art or memories presented skillfully, you went to Uncommon. Dennis also used his eye to decorate and design interiors throughout the city. He enriched both homes and businesses by creating spaces that respected and reflected the architecture and the occupants. His own home was an expression of himself, densely packed with objects of beauty, irony, history, humor, and an unerring sense of style. Over the years, Texas Tech and local hospitals trusted him to frame and curate their art, and in this way, his work continues to inspire in both the halls of education and healing.

Dennis connected with people through art. Within the Lubbock art community, he served as a source of support and perspective for his whole life, and all his best friends were artists or artistic people. Dennis supported and encouraged creativity and expression in everyone he met, be it a customer looking for a special gift or an artist wishing to display their work.

Dennis leaves behind a legacy of expression gained through talent and hard work. He matted and framed thousands of paintings, prints, photographs, souvenirs, diplomas, and artifacts. Countless walls, rooms, and halls hold a record of his life and his vision. Lubbock is more beautiful and interesting because he spent his life here, and for that, his family is proud and thankful.
