He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary Abney Barnette, brother Carl Michael Abney, brother-in-law Perry Williams (Pat), sister- in-law Barbara Abney (Mike), 4 nephews, and 3 infants. Walt had started his own obituary where he wrote, "I was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 30, 1939. This was the last year that Thanksgiving was on the last Thursday before President Roosevelt moved it back a week. I was born in St. Joseph Hospital at approximately 11:00am, weighing 10 plus pounds. I'm very sure my mom was glad when I was finally here." Walt graduated from Wellington High School in 1958. He attended his 65th high school reunion last year. He worked as a bookkeeper in a feedlot in Friona, TX before coming to Lubbock. He worked at W&W Steel for many years, retiring in 2006. He then worked as a funeral director at Rix Funeral home. He enjoyed collecting art and pottery with a fondness for items from New Mexico. He loved singing and was a talented piano and organ player. In his later years, Walt and Monty spent many evenings eating out, becoming good friends with many of the workers at Golden Corral and Buns Over Texas. They have all expressed how much he will be missed. A rosary and vigil will be held at Agape Funeral Chapel on Thursday, October 10 from 5pm to 7pm. Funeral mass will be held at Christ the King Cathedral Friday, October 11 at 10:30am. Services
