Ruth Ellen Ray, age 81, passed away on June 1, 2026. She was born on August 6, 1944, and lived a life marked by kindness, devotion, and quiet strength. Ruth will be remembered by those who knew her as a loving mother, a cherished family member, and a woman whose gentle spirit touched many lives.

Ruth was born in Oklahoma and carried the values of hard work and family throughout her life. On May 7, 1999, Ruth married her husband, Dell Ray, in Plainview, Texas. Their marriage was a meaningful part of her life, and she treasured the years they shared together. Ruth spent many years working as a cafeteria worker, where her dependable nature and warm presence were appreciated by those around her.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dell, her parents Ted and Gladys Chapman, her five brothers, Thurman Chapman, Ted Chapman, Bill Chapman, Woody Chapman, and Tommy Chapman, and her sister, Wanda Brewer. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life.

Ruth is survived by her son, David Payne, and by many loving nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind three stepchildren, Michael Ray and his wife, Julie, Lindell Ray and his wife, Sonia, and Deborah Lbsraui and her husband, Boyshare. In addition, she is survived by seven step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed by her love and presence. Her family was one of the greatest joys in her life, and she found happiness in the time she spent with them.

Ruth enjoyed the simple pleasures that made life special. She loved crocheting and found comfort in creating with her hands. She also enjoyed spending time with her dog, Oreo, who brought her companionship and joy. Family time was especially important to her, and she treasured every opportunity to be surrounded by those she loved. She also enjoyed watching Westerns, a pastime that reflected her appreciation for familiar stories and enduring values.

A Memorial Service to honor Ruth will be held on Saturday June 13, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Agape Funeral Chapel, 6625 W 19th Street Suite 103, Lubbock, TX 79407 with Chaplain Dean Daniel of BeyondFaith Hospice officiating.
