Robert Welch Obituary In Loving Memory of Robert Ernest "Grandpa" Welch April 25, 1937 – December 22, 2024 Robert Welch, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather, brother and lifelong baseball enthusiast, rounded third and slid safely into home for the final time with angels from the outfield waving him through the pearly gates. Born in Allen County, Kansas to Vonzella and Glenwood Welch, Robert was a man of unwavering integrity, compassion, and humor. He lived his life like a true ballplayer, dedicated and steady. Whether it was cheering from the stands, coaching Little League, or sharing stories about the legends of the game, baseball was not just a pastime for him but a way of life. To his family, Robert was their manager, coach, and biggest fan rolled into one. He knew when to offer a pep talk, when to let life teach its own lessons, and when to simply enjoy the game. His grandkids, his "rookies," were his pride and joy, and he taught them the value of practice, teamwork, and never giving up, both on and off the field. Off the field, he was a Master Plumber and handyman who could fix anything, a storyteller who spun tales as captivating as a ninth- inning rally, and poet whose poems were as legendary as any walk-off home run. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 66 years and best cheerleader, Charlene; children Darren Welch (Shannon), Denise Mattson (Ronnie), and Doug Welch (Renae); grandchildren Tanner Mattson (Becky), Tucker Mattson, Tyler Mattson (Kristen), Turner Mattson (Lyndsey), Evan Welch, Amelia Welch, Logan Welch, and Crystal McAnaw; and great-grandchildren Morgan, Eevie, Makenna, Easton, and Elizabeth. He is also survived by his cherished sister, Bonnie Hudon, and his brothers, Richard Welch (Doris) and James Welch and many nieces and nephews who will forever cherish his lessons in the art of perseverance and the joy of a well-played game. He is now reunited with teammates who have gone before him, surely organizing a heavenly doubleheader. As we say goodbye to Robert, we remember that he lived like the game he loved: giving his all, every inning, every pitch. While the final out has been called, his legacy remains a testament to the power of kindness, humility, and a love for life's simple joys. A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. on December 30, 2024 at Rock City Church in Lubbock, Texas. Play on, Grandpa. The bases are loaded, and the stands are cheering just for you, "Always a hero, never the goat." Services
