He was born in Wellington, Texas on August 20th, 1945, to Claude and Anna Bell (Patterson) Lamkin. He was the seventh of eight siblings. Uncle Monty is survived by thirteen nieces and nephews, Peggy Wyatt, Steve McKinney, Mark McKinney, Danny McKinney, Ramona Harwell, David Fenerty, Tracy Walraven, Lisa Smyth, Bret Lamkin, Brian Lamkin, Tina Getter, Andy Lamkin, and Kris Killingsworth, numerous great nieces and nephews, great-greats, and two great-great-greats, his dedicated caregiver Paula Cummings, and his "little girl" Sally Sue, his cherished Chihuahua. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, June McKinney, Joye Fenerty, Beth Walraven, Pete Lamkin, Harlon Lamkin, Lawrence Lamkin, and Jan Killingsworth, nephews Marty Lamkin and Tommy Lamkin, niece Cindy Lamkin, and his friend and companion of over 50 years, Walter Abney. Born in Wellington, Monty moved with his family to Lubbock at an early age. He attended Atkins Junior High. He told his niece Ramona that, as a new school, Atkins had a contest to name the mascot. Monty had the winning entry, the Tornadoes, and got his name in the Lubbock Avalanche Journal. He was baptized on September 20, 1957. He graduated from Monterey High School in 1964. The following year, he joined the United States Air Force and served at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey until he was honorably discharged in 1969. He then lived in Roswell, New Mexico with his parents while attending Eastern New Mexico University, where he studied Elementary Education. He then returned to Lubbock where he resided for the rest of his life. He was confirmed into the Roman Catholic Church at Christ the King on April 18, 1981. Monty wrote in his resume, "I was raised in the construction business. My father was a building contractor in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico for many years. He taught me a lot about residential and commercial construction." Monty was a carpet layer for 17 years, frequently working alongside his brothers Pete and Lawrence. He was a store manager for 7-Eleven stores for seven years, managing high volume stores. He was awarded the Manager of the Year from Southland Corporation in 1991 and 1994. He also worked as general manager for both Atlas Distributors and the Salvation Army Thrift Store. In 1999, he opened his own furniture store, Choices Furniture, which he ran until 2004. In their younger years, Monty and Walt loved to travel, especially in the New Mexico area. They were both avid collectors of southwestern art and pottery. As they grew older, they stayed closer to home, most often spending their time going out to dinner at Golden Corral and Buns Over Texas, where they were well loved by many who worked there. A memorial service will be held at Agape Funeral Chapel, 6625 19th Street, Lubbock, Texas on Saturday, March 1st, at 12pm. *Monty loved animals so donations to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) would be appreciated.
