Obituary

Jean March Obituary Jean T. Byrne March, a resident of Gunnison, CO for over 35 years, died peacefully on March 8, 2016, surrounded by loving family at the home of her daughter in Lubbock, TX. Jean was born in September, 1929 in Cuba City, WI and was the 4th child of Cyril and Augusta Byrne. Jean was a Mercy Nurse graduate of Loras College, Dubuque, IA. After nursing in the Midwest and on both coasts, she settled in Denver, married her husband of 49 years, Hugh L. March, in 1959, and started a family. She lived many years in the Denver area and raised six kids before moving to Lake City, CO, where the family owned and ran the Lone Pine Motel and restaurant. She moved with Hugh and kids to Gunnison in 1979, worked at the nursing home until retirement, and cared for Hugh during his later years. She was one of twelve siblings: her twin brother, Joseph Thomas, died in infancy, and many of the others have since passed including Mary Ellen, Dick, Eloise, Anne, Sally, Sue, Beth, and Jim. Her brothers Deacon and Pat survive her. She is also survived by her children Joseph Lawrence (Karen March) of Green Bay WI; Thomas Hugh (David Nelson) of Albuquerque, NM; Suzanne Marie (Mark Hartsfield) of Lubbock, TX, Virginia Jean of Durango, CO; Michael John (Melissa March) of Gunnison; and Margaret Anne (Theresa Carson) of Durango; her grandchildren Heidi, Emily, Brandon, Julie, Alan James, Lawrence, Maddie, Steven, Laura, Holli, Abigail, and Ryan; her greatgrandbaby Tucker; her close cousin Ellen Wedig, other cousins and extended family including dozens of nieces and nephews. Jean will be remembered as straight-forward and fun-loving, always whistling. Her sense of humor stayed with her until the end. She loved travelling and fishing on Rocky Mountain lakes with her friends and family. She was compassionate and fair-minded while commanding, especially to those who she trained in nursing, some of whom eventually cared for her during her old age. The family thanks the caregivers for loving their Mom as much as they do. She had a strong faith and placed her trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. Cremation has taken place, and a funeral mass and burial in Gunnison will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests folks make donations if they wish to the Gunnison Valley Health Foundation-Home Health; the Gunnison County Senior Resources-Young at Heart; the Be a Santa To a Senior Program in care of Lubbock Meals on Wheels, 2304 34th St, Lubbock, TX 79411; or a charity of their choice.
