Obituary

Jack Charles Lusk (85), beloved father of Cody L. Lusk and his wife Michelle; Cherished husband/father to Sherry Lusk and her children Charles W. Tilson, John "Cody" Tilson and his wife Anessa; and devoted Grandfather to Garrett Cody, Gibson Jack, and Griffin Scott Lusk: and Preston Blayk, Preslee Harper, and Sawyer Mack Tilson, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2026, after a brief illness.

Jack was born in Knox City, TX and was the 2nd oldest of four boys. His all-boy family provided the perfect environment to fine tune his good-natured teasing skills. He spent his formative years in Lubbock, TX and was part of the first graduating class of Monterey High School. At 18 years old, he fell in love and married Ann Calloway of Ropesville, TX. Together, they "raised" both themselves and two sons. They faced unimaginable heartbreak when their oldest son, Randy Jack, passed away when he was 23 years old. Even after they both remarried, they remained the best of friends, always putting their son Cody and his family first. Their healthy and supportive relationship as divorced parents made an indelible mark on Cody's life.

Jack started his career as a salesman at Felix West Paint after graduating high school. He then founded Lusk Drywall and built a successful business in the Lubbock area. In the late 1980s, he founded Jack Lusk Custom Homes. He continued to work in the construction industry his entire career until he "gradually" retired in his late 70s. He loved playing golf and played as much as he could over the years. He had various friend groups he golfed with and played most Saturdays with his nephew/grand-nephew and niece. After retirement, he missed working and engaging with people on a daily basis so he took a job at United Grocery. He looked forward to his weekday afternoons there and everyone loved him.

As a father, Jack passed along his outgoing personality, fun-loving nature, strong work ethic, and love of fishing and sports…especially golf. Whether Jack was teaching Sunday school, coaching the boys' teams, or taking the family on camping trips, he was involved and constantly present. No matter how hard he worked or how busy he was, he always had time for his family and friends.

On May 29, 1993, Jack served as Cody's best man when he married Michelle Gibson in San Antonio, TX. The first time Jack met Michelle, he gave her a huge bear hug, called her sweetie, and wholeheartedly welcomed her into the family as his daughter. Exactly one year later, Jack and Cody won the Stampede Member/Guest Golf tournament at Lakeridge Country Club. It is one of Cody's fondest memories and it is a testament to how lovable Jack was that Michelle never hesitated to spend her one-year anniversary sitting between father and son riding around under the hot Texas sun in a golf cart!

In 1997, Jack met and fell in love with Sherry Hall Tilson. They were married on October 24, 1998, and honeymooned in Hawaii. When their "hearts were joined, something magical happened to her life." They lovingly blended their families and "made a home…blessed by the presence of loved ones and their lives together." Their weekly, Friday night steak-dinners with Sherry's dad were a highlight for Jack. He respected Charles and cherished the strong relationship they shared. Sherry always brought a big smile to Jack's face and everyone could see the love he had for her in his eyes, even in his last days. They stood by each other and supported one another in both happy and challenging times.

In 1999, Jack took on his most cherished role in life, Grandparent, when Garrett was born…and boy did he excel at it. Given the strong male genes that run in the Lusk family, Cody's parents gave Michelle a heads up to expect all boys. In fact, Jack told Michelle if she had a girl he would "have to request a paternity test." He never had to require one as two more boys, Gibson and Griffin, followed in 2002 and 2005, respectively Even living halfway across the country, "Pop" was an engaged grandparent. He came to Virginia for their births, holidays, church events, their baptisms, and endless sports games/soccer tournaments up and down the east coast. He was a "friend favorite" at themed birthday parties, loved to take the boys to the park, meet on family vacations, and play golf with Cody and the three boys. He passed along the teasing gene and his wonderful laugh filled the room whenever they were together. The boys will never forget Pop saying he had "eyes like an eagle and feet like a beagle" and that he knew they were Lusks because they "were loud and handsome." He was affectionate, supportive, and his love for the boys was undeniable. His smile and presence were bright lights in their lives and he helped make them the men they have become. Their Pop will live on in them forever.

In 2009, Jack was blessed with the second wave of grandchildren when Cody and Anessa had Preston and then Preslee in 2012. Charlie's son, little Mack, came along in 2019. Having grandchildren close by in Lubbock and San Antonio was a blessing. He easily could be in their daily lives. He loved holding them on his lap as babies. The toddler years brought out Papa Jack's inner-child and he never hesitated to get down on all fours with his grandkids and play with all their toys. Jack loved watching Preston play basketball and football and Preslee cheer at basketball games. Preston loved to hit Papa up for dinners at local restaurants and Jack always looked forward to family dinners/outings.

Jack is survived by his devoted son, Cody Lusk; his daughter-in-love, Michelle Lusk; his loving wife of 28 years, Sherry Lusk and her children Charlie, and Cody and Anessa Tilson; his cherished grandchildren Garrett, Gibson, and Griffin Lusk; and Preston, Preslee, and Mack Tilson; and Sherry's father Charles M. Hall. He will be dearly missed by his brother Tom Lusk; close Nephews/Family Corey, Roxann, Heather, Zack and Maryona Lusk, and Dennis Lusk; close cousins Rick and Janet Lusk; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. He also will be fondly remembered by his countless friends, golfing buddies, and work colleagues.

Jack was preceded in death by his son, Randy Lusk; his parents Norman and Irene Lusk; his brothers Gene and Ronnie Lusk; Sherry's son Jason Mack Tilson; and most recently, his forever friend and Cody's mother, Ann Calloway Lusk Smith.

A memorial service for Jack Lusk's family and friends will be held on Saturday, June 20th (details below).
