Obituary

Jack Looney Obituary Jack Clinton Looney was born on October 4, 1957, in Wimpole Park, England to Ervin Paul Looney and Maxine Craig Looney. He met his end on September 27, 2022, while on his nightly walk in Buddy Holly Park in Lubbock, Texas. Jack entered the world the day the Russians launched Sputnik and "Leave It to Beaver" premiered on TV. In many ways, those two events seem to personify Jack's effect on the world: he was a game changer, and, like The Beav, he was good-hearted, curious, and prone to getting into trouble — usually unintended and almost always unique to Jack. Jack loved music, nature, philosophy, playing chess and canasta, and advocating for everything from clean living to human rights. He was a 1975 graduate of Lubbock's Monterey High School, earned his BA from Texas Tech University, and his JD from the Texas Tech School of Law. He began delivering newspapers in his early teen years, and continued to do so through his second year of law school, walking every step with papers on his back twice daily. Thereafter, he practiced law in Lubbock, Texas, then worked in sales for AT&T. Coming full circle, Jack then developed a business hawking papers for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal on Sundays. He created a business model that enabled "his people" to check out papers, work as many or as few hours as they chose, pay for the papers after they were sold, and return unsold papers without charging the hawkers for the papers. He gave anyone who wanted work that opportunity, trusted "his people" to do right by him, and they rarely let him down. Jack was forever standing up for people and expressing his opinions. He lived life out loud, wore brightly colored clothes, and spoke to anyone – "Love that color on you!", "Cool tattoo!"... His first love was music and music theory. He dreamed of having a band to play rock classics, folk, country, and old standards from long ago. He was a long-time member of the Lubbock Chorale and the Lubbock Singing Plainsmen barbershop chorus. He held season tickets to the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, where he always sat front row, center. Jack was a devoted Precinct Chairman in the Lubbock County Democratic Party, and was committed to furthering policies that would best serve the greatest numbers of people and promotion of equality, compassion, and human rights. Jack loved his family – all of them. He was the third of five children and had a huge extended family. Any time he could spend time with family, he was all in, whether at family reunions, or a quick drop-in while passing through town. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Maxine Looney. Surviving loved ones include Clint Looney, Paul Looney, Linda Tucker, Celia Slover, Teresa Roeder, their children and grandchildren, a host of elders in his extended family, cousins, and countless friends who were like family. Services will be held at 3:00 on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Second Baptist Church, 6109 Chicago Avenue, Lubbock, Texas, and the service will be streamed live on secondb.org for those who are unable to attend in person. If attendees would like, wearing bright colors would be a delightful homage to Jack's well-known sense of personal style. Services
