Jun 21, 1919 — May 22, 2013
George Grantham Obituary Master Sergeant George Grantham, Jr, 93, of Wolfforth, Texas, peacefully went to be with his Savior on May 22, 2013. George was born June 21, 1919 in Ocilla, Irwin County, Georgia. A memorial to celebrate Mr. Grantham's life will be held Saturday, May 25th at 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church, Wolfforth, Texas. Cremation services will be with Agape Funeral Home. Honorary, military graveside services will be held in Moultrie, Georgia at Cobb-Suncrest Cemetery June 4, 2013. George Jr. was born to George Sr. and Honor Grantham on June 21, 1919. He grew up in Chula, Georgia and Irwin County, Georgia with eleven brothers and sisters. The Grantham family lived on a large tobacco and cotton farm, which they owned and worked for many years. In August of 1941, at the age of 22, George joined the Air Force and served honorably in the Philippines during World War II. Serving his country was very dear to his heart and he was proud of his time spent as Master Sergeant. George received an honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1960. Following his discharge, he pursued a career as an insurance agent for American United Life. Mr. Grantham met Virginia Lillie Peace in Funston, Georgia in 1946. A few short months later the two were married on January 18, 1947. The newlyweds relocated to Bossier City, Louisiana where he was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base. The family moved to Lubbock in 1949 where George was then stationed at Reese Air Force Base. George and Virginia raised three children Jeannine, Peggy, and George and lived in Lubbock until 1971 when they moved to Garland, Texas. After retirement in 1990, they relocated to Norman Park, Georgia. While living in Norman Park, Virginia went to be with the Lord in 1993, after which George returned to live in Lubbock, Texas where he resided until his passing. George was extremely sentimental about time spent with his family and cherished each moment with them. He was quite the storyteller and was often found recalling war stories or ones of days gone by in his childhood. He loved to share life with others, relished meeting new friends, and never met a stranger. His wife, Virginia Peace, and all of his brothers and sisters preceded George in death. He leaves behind his children, Jeannine Grantham of Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia, Peggy and Randy Mitchell of Wolfforth, Texas, and George and Suzanne Grantham of Madison, Georgia; Grandchildren: Brandon Mitchell, Alicia and Jon Matthews, Mike and Tiffany Spano, Amy Grantham all of Lubbock, TX and April and Jenna Grantham of Madison, Georgia; Great Grand-Children: Ally Spano, Madison and Sadie Mitchell, and Emmy Matthews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of George Grantham, Jr. at Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675 or http://support.woundedwarriorproject.org.
