Francis
Cox
Jan 10, 1926 — Feb 15, 2026
Francis "Mule" Cox, 100, of Lubbock, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026.
Born on January 10, 1926, in Webbers Falls, Francis was the son of William and Lucille Cox. From an early age he was known as Caesar but because of his strength, grit, and determination he later earned the nickname "Mule," a title he carried proudly.
Francis honorably served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. His commitment to service did not end there. He devoted more than four decades to law enforcement, beginning with the Lubbock Police Department from July 1960 to January 1969. He later served with the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office from July 1, 1972, to May 17, 2004. Afterward, he continued his career in public service with the United States Marshals Service, retiring for the final time at the remarkable age of 87. Law enforcement was not just his career — it was his calling. Serving his country and community was his passion.
On April 6, 1972, Francis married the love of his life, Juanita Odom. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and steadfast devotion.
He is survived by his children: Carl (LaWanda)Cox of Heflin, LA; Connie Cox of Pelzer, SC; Jerry (Janie) Martin of Sesakwa, OK; Ricky (Suzy) Martin of Lubbock, TX; Cindy Boyd of Abernathy, TX; Steven (Marie) Hicks of Riverside, CA; Jo Ann (Roger) Gray of Simms, TX; Terri Bird of Lubbock, TX; and Melissa (John) Jameson of Midland, TX.; a his sister, Jewell Cox of Webbers Falls, Oklahoma.
He also leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of 26 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Bobby Cox, and nine brothers.
Francis was known for his unwavering determination, his deep love for his family, and yes — his stubbornness "as a mule." Those who knew him understood that behind that strong will was a man of deep loyalty, integrity, and heart.
A Memorial Service will be held at Quaker Avenue Church of God, 4320 53rd Street in Lubbock, Texas, on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
