Donald Longworth Obituary Donald S. Longworth, 93, of Lubbock passed away on November 18, 2013, at home. A celebration of his life will be held at the home, 6610 Joliet Dr. on Saturday, November 23, 2013, between 2 and 4 p.m. In 1939, Dr. Donald Longworth graduated from high school in Rawson, Ohio, and went on to earn his BS degree at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. He then completed an army special training program in psychology at the University of Iowa and served his country in the United States Army from 1943-1946. After his service, he went back to Bowling Green to complete a MA and then to Ohio State University, where he received his PhD in family sociology in 1952. Donald Longworth spent more than fifteen years teaching and serving universities in Ohio and Michigan including serving as chairman of Bowling Green Sociology Department. Upon moving to Lubbock, he accepted a position to teach family studies courses at Texas Tech's College of Human Sciences. He later became department chairman for Family Relations. In 1971-1981, he served as the third dean of the College of Human Sciences. During his decade long term as dean, the number of faculty with doctoral degrees increased from 17 percent to 82 percent. It was during his tenure that doctoral programs were approved for each of the areas of study in the college. One of Longworth's prized contributions to the community, outside his service to the College of Human Sciences, was donating $5,000 to Texas Tech Professor Billie Wolfe to help launch Lubbock's American Wind Power Center and Museum, Which exhibits an impressive collection of rare and unique windmills. He has also served as president of the Lubbock Apartment Association in 1971. Plus he also served as President of Planned Parenthood and supported a program to encourage family planning in all areas of the world. Donald Longworth was also appointed by the late former Governor Ann Richards to serve a five-year term as advisor to the State of Texas Real Estate Center. He was an avid fisherman, which he passed on to his children and grandchildren. Over the years Dr. Longworth, along with his wife, Betty, have continued to give generously to the College of Human Sciences through various scholarships, and also to the Christine DeVitt and Helen DeVitt Jones Child Development Research Center building renovation. To ensure they always have an opportunity to promote educational pursuits, they have a scholarship set up in their name. His four children, Glenn Longworth, James Longworth, Debra Roberts, and Beverly Suarez survive Donald Longworth as do seven grand children and eight great grandchildren. His wife, Betty I. Longworth, preceded him in death. The family suggests memorials be made to the Donald S. and Betty I. Longworth Scholarship at Texas Tech University, PO Box 41081, Lubbock, Texas, 79409-1081.
