David Shannon
Young
Apr 26, 1958 — Jun 4, 2024
David Young Obituary David Shannon Young, age 66, of Lubbock, TX passed away unexpectedly on 6/4/2024. He is survived by his wife Veronica Young, daughter Bethany Crosby (Adrian), son Christopher Young, brother Phillip Young (Becky), and three grandchildren; Rylan, Greyson and Addison. Shannon was born in Texas City, TX on April 26,1958, son of George Arthur Young and Oma Catherine Young. He was the middle child of three siblings: Jeff, Shannon, and Phil. Shannon learned hardship early as his father died from melanoma when Shannon was only 7 years old. Shannon attended Texas Tech University taking mostly art classes, blowing glass, and majoring in a good time. A motor vehicle accident in 1978 changed his educational plans. Three days after Christmas, two of his close friends went on a ski trip. On the way to their destination, his friend's car slid on ice on an overpass killing one of the two. That incident led Shannon to become a paramedic. He wondered if someone at the scene had been medically trained if his friend would have survived the accident. In his more than 20 plus years of service with Lubbock EMS he rescued and extricated numerous traffic accident victims, delivered babies, and saved the lives of many who had been involved in shootings, stabbings, fires, and domestic violence. Many times, he was first at the scene after an attempted murder or suicide. Paramedics often get to the scene before the police. He told stories of being shot at, spit on, and once attacked by an individual wielding a vacuum cleaner. He saw it all, some things he could never unsee. In the early years of Lubbock EMS, Shannon and his brother Jeff became certified scuba divers. They were called when law enforcement needed to locate a drowning victim in one of the local playa lakes. Shannon would say there's nothing like coming chest to chest with a slimy dead body in murky water. He added "you could nearly suck a tank dry in seconds" from the unanticipated greeting! In 1982 Shannon met the love of his life, Veronica Melgar. At the time, she was a television news anchor. A mutual paramedic friend named JR set up a double-date with him and his wife. Shannon and Veronica didn't like each other at all at first, but before the evening was over, they each decided the other wasn't so bad. The rest is history; they recently celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary. For years, Shannon complained about getting stuck with the entire bill that night for dinner and drinks. Shannon and Veronica married the following year. He didn't want to get married until his taxes were done. She set the date; April 16, 1983. They had two children, Bethany and Christopher, who blessed them with 3 grandchildren who affectionately named him "HA HA". Shannon worked in construction from the age of 16. He spent his days off of EMS building, remodeling, and tearing stuff up. On April 11, 2001, the Lubbock Community Development Department named him Contractor of the Year for his work in handicap accessibility remodel. He also worked many years as an FHA inspector. Most of all, Shannon loved his family and friends. He and Veronica enjoyed going to happy hour every day after work to cuss and discuss the day's events. They shared many Ultras and a tequila shot when necessary. Necessity called often. Shannon was not a religious man, but he was spiritual; he loved God and they spoke frequently. He exhibited this relationship with God by helping others from every walk of life. He would give you the shirt off his back, and it was probably a black shirt. Black was his color of choice because he would say "there is no darker color". Shannon touched many lives. He will be missed and remembered always.
