Brian Kurt
Smith
Oct 25, 1960 — Jun 1, 2017
Brian Smith Obituary Brian Kurt Smith, aged 56, of Idalou, Texas changed permanent residence June 1, 2017. He was born in Lubbock, Texas October 25, 1960 to Robert Keith Smith, Sr. and Barbara Jean Luster Smith. Because our family had a bit of the vagabond spirit, Kurt spent his childhood moving more often than not, and attended at last count 15 schools in 12 years. During all of those moves, he managed to make a lifelong best friend (Richard Maynard), who shared in the boyhood that young men still enjoyed in the 1970's (camping, fishing, swimming in the Colorado River, shooting guns, and riding bikes until the street lights came on. After the high school years had ended, Kurt followed Richard into the United States Air Force to be an airplane mechanic. The allure of a guaranteed job and travel sounded wonderful to 18 year-old Kurt. The only travel that Kurt had the good fortune to experience was to the desert of Victorville, California, before he decided that the military life wasn't for him. After the military years, Kurt experienced some more years in "The Desert", but not in the literal sense. This time that I speak of was more in the vein of the, "Prodigal Son." He was searching in his life for meaning, purpose, and acceptance, in a lot of the wrong places. This sense of purpose was fulfilled when he received a call from his grandmother, Ruby Luster, asking him to return home to spend the last years of his grandparents lives with them. As was his nature where his family and friends were concerned, he did not hesitate to return home. After his grandmother's death in 1996, Kurt became the constant companion to his grandfather, Amos Luster. Not only were they grandfather and grandson, they were the best of friends. They had a standing appointment every week to watch "Walker, Texas Ranger," which went unbroken. If you asked Kurt after these years had passed, he would tell you that he had found his purpose in staying with his grandparents those last few years, and it was a privilege to do so. As mentioned beforehand, Kurt had spent his time as the prodigal son. Just as the parable eventually plays out, He returned home to repent to his father. Kurt accepted Christ as his Savior and was Baptized at Parkway Baptist Church in Lubbock, TX. Because of the loving kindness of his Heavenly Father, and the grace extended to him, Kurt was able to leave this life and claim his eternal home among his friends and family who preceded him in death; including his grandparents Amos and Ruby Luster, and his baby brother, Jeffery Kirk Smith. Kurt is survived by his mother, Barbara Smith of Lubbock; his Brother, Keith Smith of Romoland, California; His sister Kelley Blaylock (husband Todd) of Poetry, Texas; his stepson Jason Elkin (wife Miranda) of California; Nieces and Nephews: Shelby Quintero (Jesus), Jessica Martinez (Victor), Chelsie Mendoza (Brayan), Taylor Blaylock, Cassidy Blaylock, Ford Blaylock, Karly Seipel, and Sam Williams. Among his survivors, Kurt would be very upset if his "son" Jethro Smith was omitted. Jethro is a 4-footed, miniature long-haired dachshund who was with Kurt up until his last moments on this earth. Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at Parkway Baptist Church in Lubbock, Texas. Sidney (Shorty) Fallon will be officiating. Services
